I had a problem that was due to a setting in nautilus see
I developed an odd and disturbing screen, after changes, such that after entering my password at login this view appeared, although it disappeared once the personal settings had been established.
After some days of pondering about the updates, upgrades and other changes I had made I thought that previously the wallpaper appeared before I typed my password, if I waited a while, and yet now waiting neither helped the disfigurement nor allowed for the wallpaper to arise.
I thought I would at least revert to the old wallpaper to see what would happen and lo and behold I am back to what I expected; the wallpaper appears and there is no disfigurement. I have yet to discover if the wallpaper arrival hid the disfigurement or the searching for it initiated it.
Trying to set default programme to open wma files and found instructions to right click instance of file type and open properties, but there I get a crash.
Nautilus says there are obsolete packages, which I updated via synaptics, now the system crashes with no message, desktop icons disappear and there's a freeze so I have to hard power off.
Ok now updated and upgraded via terminal, some 18 packages via upgrade so will try again. Properties window came up but closed itself, desktop icons disappear and system freezes. Firefox slowly comes alive.
Crashed and frozen: hard restart
Next: Reinstalled nautilus and added extras
Discovered properties work except when file is wma. About to try other files, but this crash removes desktop icons.
Crashed and froze again when opening properties on wma file. Will see if it's related to SD card
Nope! not location related; could open properties of jpg file in same folder but wma file causes crash and removes desktop icons. Can open firefox ok but cannot close it. Looks like a windows management problem. About to close Fx
Nope! closed ok maybe it's just a problem when minimising?
Yeap! Problem minimising gedit as well??
Found similar problem http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1070760.html but page is blank??
Work around nautilus use terminal
1. cd /usr/share/applications/
2. sudo gedit defaults.list
Line 147 audio/x-ms-wma=totem.desktop change to audio/x-ms-wma=mpv.desktop
Libre Office Version 18.104.22.168
Sheet names on Libre Office Calc are very small, apparently this is due to being on the same panel as the horizontal scroll bar and the scrollbar width/height is set by gtk theme. So it depends upon the theme in use etc.
I modified the scrollbar width in [/usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc]
Line 35 GtkScrollbar::slider-width = 13
Increased value from 13 to 16 ( Of course it means I have wider scrollbars everywhere, which is ok!
Apparently this is not a problem in later version from 4.4 onwards as the scrollbar is on a separate panel to the sheet names; which is good as there was always a problem with having such a short horizontal scroll bar with more than a few sheets. https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/libreoffice-4-4
Will see if I can find the mod to separate them: EDIT though not sure I want it now ?

Auto update of Adobe Flash broke video in Channel 4&5, apparently due to DRM coding so had to do commands again.
Works for 14.04
Ubuntu user Michael Blennerhassett maintains a PPA for Ubuntu 13.10 only that contains the required HAL package, along with a patch from (the always awesome) Arch Linux folks that fixes several issues that result from using the older HAL package in Saucy.
To add the PPA open a new Terminal window and enter the following commands carefully:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mjblenner/ppa-hal
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install hal
