santhara: sacrifice or suicide
It is possible for someone to sacrifice something in order to gain something. A parent may sacrifice their life for their child. More altruistically someone may sacrifice themselves for another human or even some animal.

It is not without understanding that someone may do so for environmental reasons.

Someone may reach a point where they wish to end their killing spree, called living by most, is no surprise. Such an action or the inaction of continuing to sustain the body corporeal is not done on a whim, like suicide. Under the Jain guidance, immediate family members, parents and children should give their approval or consent.

Whether this is a recognition of one's age and continuing degradation leading to a lack of desire to continue the game of survival or a real attempt at a spiritual transcendence is debatable and is left to the immediate family and friends. It is not a matter of public approval where ascendancy is paramount.
